Shel is living with Silver and I for the month. She’s an actress. Recently she sent out a manifesto to everyone at her agency. It described the kinds of roles she really wants to play and the kind of person she is. So I thought, well, maybe I can do that too. This might help me focus on how to get out of my rut. Let’s see…
The most important thing for me is to find my own life interesting.
What I want out of life:
- A career
- Artistic pursuits (visual and literary; fashion as art)
- Beauty. I want art in my life, and in my house. I want to see beautiful things in galleries and on the street.
- A beautiful gang of friends and a busy social schedule
- Travel. Physical travel and travel through literature.
- Alone time
- Intellectual stimulation (continuing education throughout my life)
- A friendship with my body (frequent trips to the gym)
- Music (live and recorded)
- Technology (the internet and iPhone, I mean YOU!)
Things that are not important or particularly interesting to me include:
- Television
- Advertising, anything branded, anything that people want me to buy
- Food (I don’t find food a sensual experience. I eat to live)
- Breeding
- Marriage/weddings as consumer items
- Doing anything for the purpose of having people remember you after you die
- Religion
- Stuff.
What I want out of work:
• I want a job that is always teaching me new things. I want to be in an environment that promotes the intellectual growth of its staff. I want to use my brain. I want to use my skills. I want to gain more skills.
• I want change to happen in my workplace. I want to work with people who are open to change.
• I want a workplace that embraces technology, not because they have no choice, but because they LOVE technology and welcome technology and understand that it’s the future.
• I want to be in a workplace where at least SOME of the other staff are as passionate and driven as me. Preferably, I would like to work with people who can see the bigger picture: who know where they fit in an organisation, an institution and an industry, and who are willing to contribute to all those sectors.
• I want to write in my job.
• I want to be taken seriously at work. I want people to consider me an intelligent person with opinions and ideas to share.
What I want out of my friendships:
• I want a combination of gossip, small-talk and deep & meaningful conversation. I don’t always want to talk about how I’m feeling. I want you to listen to me sometimes, but also to understand that mostly I enjoy listening to you more than I enjoy talking.
• I don’t really care what you think of politics or bands or ephemeral stuff like that. Come with me to a march or a gig if you like, or don’t. I wont mind.
• I want you to stick to your own ideals. Never EVER change your mind just because you think it’ll make me feel good.
• I want the kind of friendship that is still great even after I’ve been overseas for a year (or you have).
The kind of person I’d like to have a relationship with:
• I want a negotiator. Someone who says, “Here, this is what I want. But look, I can compromise on this point, if you like”.
• I want someone who reads. A lot. I want to know that you’ve visited places in your mind, even if you haven’t seen the world. But I would like it if you’ve seen the world too.
• I’d like a person who can apologise. Who can explain what went wrong, and who can say sorry.
• I want a person who produces something, even if it’s small. I want to see your writing/band/song you wrote/painting/computer program/graphics/piece of furniture/letter to me.
• I’d like to be with someone who is different enough from me to be able to tell me things I don’t know and show me things I haven’t seen before. I want to be surprised occasionally by things you say.
• I don’t want someone to buy me stuff. Like I said, I don’t care about stuff.
• Must have good dental hygiene.
• Must wear tight black jeans. Ok, I can probably compromise there.
That’s it.

Romany, you are wonderful. This is a good entry. (The first of yours I've ever read). Good to have it all out of your head and on paper/in the cloud. By the way, I think I fit all your ideal partner requirements except that I don't read much. You fit all of mine except that you read too much :D kidding.. I would add to this list: "someone who likes reading books together, taking turns to read out loud to each other in bed. (in between bouts of raunchy romping)".
I love and miss you sweet, edgy, passionate, big-hearted, sexy Romany. Go forth and get what you want!
Jord x
seems like a really good idea to reinforce what YOU want and who you are. yay you.
It's good to know what you want. :)
I tend to work the other way around - make a list of dealbreakers, and work back from there.
Hey, I'm not saying I wont do an "about face"! But at the moment I wrote that, it's how I felt.
Jordz, I love you man. But stay in Europe.
I really like this! It's good to know what you want and put that energy out there, not to sound like a filthy hippie. I might do this too!
Hun, loved this post, I feel the same way about a lot of the stuff you've mentioned. Fulfilling work and a interesting, spirited life full of friends and travel. Make it happen! xo
